Having trouble posting or changing forum settings? The Triumph Experience www. I have an engine out of a MG Midget. I haven't pulled the engine out of the Spitfire yet so I know that I am going to have to change the clutch and flywheel. I would like to know if the motor mounts and other hook ups will be a problem.

Any advise will be appreciated. Sponsored Links. Re: Mg Midget engine swap 2. I thought I commented on this but my post must have gotten lost in an internet black hole. It won't work. I gotta go. I'll explain later if someone else doesn't. Re: Mg Midget engine swap 3. Top Contributor. You did. This is also running in another thread. Re: Mg Midget engine swap 4. Thank you Michael, I found your answer in the other thread. I'm just learning how to use this forum.

I guess I'll have to look for another engine or tear my down and see if it is worth rebuilding. It was run dry of oil so I don't know how badly it was damaged. Thank you very much for your wisdom. Re: Mg Midget engine swap 5. Gerald, The Spitfire engine was put in the MG Midget when British Leyland determined that the MG engine was no longer able to do the job of moving the Midget around and handle all the emission controls.

The MG and the Triumph engines are both considered engines, but they are not the same engine and they are not interchangeable. While you could conceivably install a Triumph engine in a midget don't know why you would want to , you can't put a MG engine in a Spitfire without a lot of finagling.

First of all, the MG engine will not bolt directly to the Triumph gearbox. When they put a Triumph engine in the Midget, they put it in complete with a Triumph gearbox. The will not bolt directly to a Triumph gearbox, and the clutch and flywheel from a Spitfire will not bolt to the engine.

At the very least, you would need to fabricate a rear engine plate to match the bell housing bolt pattern of the Triumph gearbox, but you'd additionally have to find a clutch that fits both the engine and the later Triumph single rail four speed.

This may be possible because of the old Marina's use of the single rail gearbox, but good luck finding one in the US. The Triumph engines motor mounts and front plate are a structural part of the front suspension uprights and help to stabilize them.

You would have to fabricate something to adapt the Midget's low mounted engine mount plates to the Triumph chassis mounts. On top of everything else, the Triumph and MG engines are reversed with regards to carburetor and ignition placement, and the MG engine has no fuel pump on the engine as they went to electric fuel pump by the Mark III midget. You could probably put a fuel pump on from a Sprite or Midget engine, but you might have to drill and tap the mounting holes in the casting.

I don't recall whether they put a plate over the hole or just never machined the holes in the engine block on the later engines. And again, the fuel pump is on the wrong side of the engine anyway. You would have to re-route fuel lines, choke and accelerator cables, and electrical wiring to accommodate the Midget engine. In the end, after you worked out all this, you would have a slower oddball Spitfire.

Why not track down a Triumph engine? Re: Mg Midget engine swap 6. I will tear down the to see if it is salvageable. If it is damaged too bad I will start looking for another engine. I have a 75 4 speed transmission that shifts great but is noisy at speed. Like I said it shifts and drives great but I'm a little concerned about all the noise it makes. Sponsored Links. Re: Transmission 2. Russ78MG Russell Young.

Kenner, Louisiana, USA. John, Mine made some wild noises a while back when I accelerate would go away and when i gas it out it would have a high pitch squeeking noise that annoy the heck out of me. I changed out my universal joints and the noise is gone. Now I am doing a restore and hope to get her painted by spring and back on the road before summer.

Hope this helps! Thanks, Russell Young. Re: Transmission 3. What kind of noise is it making, high pitched wine-bearing noise, low growl-worn gear noise, chunky noise-broken parts, etc.. Re: Transmission 4. Not really broken parts sound- I would say a mixture of worn gear sound and high pitched bearing noise. But nothing that is too offensive.

How hard is it to rebuild these? Or would be better to just replace the trans? Re: Transmission 5. As in Russell's anecdote, I'd start with the "easy" stuff first THEN I'd work my way into the 'box. Noises have an odd way of propigating through the car so the "obvious" culprit may just be an innocent victim of noise being generated elsewhere.

Rear bearings spring to mind as in propigation of noise, not necessarily your dilemma. Re: Transmission 6. It may be things are just fine and it is what it is.
